For this project, we created roller coasters based on the novel To Kill A Mockingbird. I worked in a group of three, and my group members were Alejandra S. and Jacob F. As A group, we had to pick a character from To Kill A Mockingbird and base our roller coaster about them. After much debate, my group decided to pick Calpurnia. We named our roller coaster "Cal's Mockingbird" and created five different moments from the book. We also explained and represented five different literary devices. It was a little challenging working as a group, because we always had trouble agreeing on things.
The five moments we chose to represent in our literary device is; The Kitchen, The dog scene, The church, The courthouse, Calpurnias house. We created all of these moments and made them apart of the roller coaster. Each moment represented a part of the roller coaster. For ex. the dog scene was represented as the loop, while the corkscrew was the courthouse. Some of the literary devices such as the kitchen also overlapped for the literary devices, the kitchen was a moment and literary device because it is the setting. After doing this project, I learned a lot more about Calpurnia after analyzing the book. I also was able to analyze details from the book concerning Calpurnia that I would have never paid attention too before this project.
I think the overall roller coaster came out really well, and I am proud of the final product. Our main struggles were agreeing on things and remembering to bring things that we brought home. We overcame these problems by helping remind each other, and using a democratic type of democracy to come up with decisions.
I worked very productively through this project, and I think I worked really well concerning work ethic. Some things that I did that had to do with work ethic, is that I always made sure the priority things were done, for ex. I made sure we started to build before we finished all of the moments because I knew that the construction of the roller coaster would take the longest. Next time, I think I could have drilled in the wood faster than I had, this is because I had some problems finding a drill with power.
I think the biggest challenge I had for this project was working with my group members. And so because of this I would of really liked to have chosen at least one person that we would want to work with.
